What is Evocantus?
Evocantus is the Latin word for "evocative." It also contains another Latin word, cantus, which means "song." The choir named "Evocantus" is a traditional a cappella choral ensemble designed for young professionals, college students, and those looking for an advanced chamber choir experience. We will program beautiful, evocative music, that we will perform in unique places where a traditional larger choir might not fit.
What makes Evocantus different?
This choir is designed to compliment our busy lives. As a community choir, each member works collaboratively to create the choir experience they desire to have. Each of the singers will participate in selecting the ensemble's repertoire, set rehearsal and performance dates, and choose various goals to meet during rehearsals. We will actively rely on one another to produce the best, most advanced choir possible given our skill levels and availability.
When will Evocantus Rehearse and Perform?
The rehearsal and performance schedule will be decided by the ensemble throughout the performance season, which will run from October through June. No specific day or time is set until all members have had a chance to indicate their availability. In the unlikely experience that no time is universally available, we will meet at the time that the most members can participate, and possibly alternate so everyone can attend rehearsal. Performances will also be determined by the ensemble, though we occasionally perform at Eugene Concert Choir and Eugene Vocal Arts concerts.
Who directs Evocantus?
Chris Dobson, an active local choir director, public school choir teacher, and singer with over 20 years of experience, will facilitate rehearsals, though most of the music will be performed without anyone formally conducting. Chris has experience working with singers of all ages, and has performed in award-winning ensembles and on some of the world's most impressive stages. He was selected to lead this ensemble due to his demonstrated leadership, content knowledge, choral skills, and his positive reputation in the Eugene performing arts community. He is passionate about this project, and ready to bring this new concept to life in our community.
